About ASEAN-India Regional Office (AIRO)

Mission

  1. Contribute to creating a more prosperous society in the ASEAN-India region by planning development of transport and tourism, taking a widely encompassing view of ASEAN, India, Japan, and North America and utilizing links with the other bases of JTTRI.
  2. Make tangible progress in local areas of the ASEAN-India region in meeting current and future challenges facing transport and tourism by facilitating cooperation of industry and academia.
  3. Build a long-lasting relationships of friendship and trust between public officials and private businesspersons in the transport and tourism areas in the ASEAN-India region and Japan, by promoting communication, collaboration and cooperation.

Duties

  1. Collect information on trends, hindering factors, and needs of the policies, regulations, infrastructure development, etc. created for transport and tourism in the ASEAN-India region.
  2. Conduct surveys and research, including analyzing collected information, discovering problems, and considering concrete plans to resolve those problems, based on JTTRI's academic and practical knowledge regarding transport and tourism in Japan.
  3. Provide results of surveys and research, including policy proposals, widely to stakeholders, mainly in the ASEAN-India region and Japan, through online distribution and publication of reports, holding seminars and symposiums, etc.
  4. Establish organizational and interpersonal networks among stakeholders in international, governmental, academic, and private institutions in the ASEAN-India region and Japan through the above data collection, surveys, research, information distribution/provision, etc.

JTTRI established an award (JTTRI Special Award) given to an excellent paper in the field of public transportation and mobility activity presented at the International Conference of EASTS, starting in 2019.

OKUDA Tetsuya

President

Appointed as President for International Affairs of JTTRI and President for JITTI USA in 2019. Joined MOT (currently MLIT) in 1984. Served at MLIT as Director-General of Road Transport Bureau, Director-General of Railway Bureau, Deputy Vice-Minister for Policy Coordination of the Minister's Secretariat, and Director-General of the Aviation Network Department of the Civil Aviation Bureau (CAB). Worked for Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) as Executive Director of London Office. Wide experience in all aspects of transport and tourism.​

SAWADA Takaaki *

Executive Director/ Senior Research Fellow

Joined MOT (currently MLIT) in 1998. Served at MLIT as Director of JR Affairs Office of Railway Bureau, Director of Freight Railway Policy Office of Railway Bureau, and Director of Tourism Department of Chubu District (Central Japan) Transport Bureau. Worked for Embassy of Japan in Thailand as First Secretary. Has thorough knowledge of transport and tourism in Thailand and all of Southeast Asia and of Japan's policies for railways, tourism, and logistics.​

YAMASHITA Yukio *

Senior Director / Senior Research Fellow​

Joined MOT (currently MLIT) in 1976. Served at MLIT as Director of Policy Division for Universal Design of Policy Bureau, Director of International Office of Maritime Bureau and Director for International Cooperation of Policy Bureau, and Air Traffic Controller. Worked for Cabinet Secretariat as Counsellor and for Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency (JRTT) as Senior Director of International Affairs and Corporate Planning Department. Wide international experience in all aspects of transport and tourism.​

SAKAI Keiichi *

Research Fellow

Joined MLIT in 2012. Served at MLIT as Deputy Director of Cruise Promotion and Port Logistics Planning Office of Kanto (Tokyo Metropolitan) Regional Development Bureau, Deputy Director of the Planning Office of Ports and Harbors Bureau and Staff of Aviation Strategy Division of CAB. Wide experience in development and utilization of ports, airports and logistics, including planning of new long-term port policy "PORT 2030" and conducting "EX/IM Container Cargo Flow Survey".​

MINAMI Yusuke *

Research Fellow

Joined JRTT in 2015 after working as a city officer. Served at JRTT as Chief in Railway Construction Site Office and Staff in Construction Division of Hokuriku Shinkansen. Worked for Nishinomiya City Office as Engineer of City Development Examination Division. Wide experience in high-speed railway construction and city development.​
