Event Summary
Even as Japan becomes an aging society with a low birthrate, the population continues to grow in the Tokyo area. In the city center, development is progressing due to urban revitalization in view of international competition between cities, and at some railway stations, congestion is intensifying. In the suburbs, housing estates developed in the areas along railway lines are approaching the renewal period, and how to maintain the attractiveness as a residential area is a challenge for revitalizing the area and railways. In addition, new issues and challenging themes have emerged for railways and their areas, such as responding to the rapidly increasing number of tourists visiting Japan and the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, and applying innovations to create better communities in the future.
In this symposium, based on these circumstances, we discussed from a long-term perspective how to create attractive railways and areas supporting the Tokyo area in the future.
