Outline of the seminar

In the first half, Ms. Tsunagawa of Bespoke Inc. made her presentation first on the theme of “Case Studies of Japan’s First AI Chatbot on Tourism and its Potentials”.

According to Ms. Tsunagawa, an AI chatbot has rapidly become popular in tourism in these days because of increasing popularity of smartphones and the shortage of multilingual workforces, which drives many private companies and local governments to consider introducing chatbots.

Also, what is possible for AI now and its potential for the future, showing the case studies of “Bebot”, a multilingual AI chatbot service, which her company provides and whose users now accounts for 40,000 per day domestically, was explained in her presentation. Focusing attention on the difficult situation when dealing with inbound tourists to Japan, she suggested that chatbots would contribute to solve the situation in various ways in terms of automated multilingual customer service as well as congestion mitigation, transportation service and up-selling.

She also explained world trends to create new businesses by combination AI advanced technology with big data gathered by chatbots and introduced unique cases in tourism and transport industry such as cases of airports, hotels and railways.

After Ms. Tsunagawa’s presentation, Mr. Fukuchi made his presentation on the theme of “IoT and Strategic Management of Tourism and Transport Industries”.

He gave beneficial suggestions regarding how tourism and transport industries should cope with the situation where IoT (Internet of Things) connects in various ways through the Internet and AI increasingly deals with IoT data processing. From the viewpoint of business administration, especially, strategic management, Mr. Fukuchi provided concrete examples to explain about the future impacts of IoT and AI on the industry and how the industry should deal with this issue.

In the second half, a lively discussion was held with these two guest speakers and a moderator, Professor Hirotaka Yamauchi of JTTRI President of Research. In the Q&A session, the significance of AI utilization, the future business development along with IoT progress in the world, the influence of AI and IoT on strategic management and common issues which Japanese organizations and businesses face were discussed, as the impact of AI and IoT to Tourism and Transport industry.

It was a successful seminar with over 100 participants from universities, research institutions, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, local governments, tourism and transport companies, and consulting firms.
